Putnam County

POW’R Against Tobacco works and partners with the Department of Health, local coalitions, organizations, individual citizens, businesses and non-for-profit organizations to reduce smoking rates and to create tobacco free environments that protect non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke. Putnam has one of lowest smoking rates in the New York State, it spans over 246 miles, and is home to approximately 98,892 residents. A strong partnership with the Putnam County Department of Health and their emphasize on tobacco control continues to be a corner stone of our work within the community.

POW’R Against Tobacco has been working with Putnam County Department of Health, Putnam County Prevention Council, and Green Chimneys to implement tobacco-free outdoor air policies, smoke-free housing, and to educate and empower youth. Through our partnerships, we have seen great success in these policy areas and educate our community about the impacts of flavored tobacco products, youth initiation, and tobacco retailer marketing. Through our continued partnerships with local businesses, housing authorities, community agencies, and municipalities POW’R continue to improve the health of Putnam County by creating smoke-free environments.

Orange County

POW’R Against Tobacco is the leading tobacco control organization in Orange County dedicated to partnering with local coalitions, individual citizens, businesses and non-for-profit organizations to reduce smoking rates and to create tobacco free environments that protect non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke. This Hudson Valley county ranges from rural to urban communities, spans 839 square miles, and is home to approximately 384,940 residents.  Collaborating with our local community partners, POW’R participates in a variety of community events and activities that deliver our message throughout Orange county and empowers communities to engage in strategies to de-normalize tobacco use.

POW’R Against Tobacco has made great strides within the Orange County community especially through its partnership of over 15 years with the TEAM Newburgh Coalition. The long-standing partnership culminated in 2015 with the adoption of a local licensing law in the City of Newburgh which was the toughest in the nation at the time and again in 2018 when the City Council passed a comprehensive law that prohibited any smoke or vape on municipally owned property. Local coalitions continue to be major stakeholders and trailblazers in this community championing the right for clean air.

Westchester County

POW’R Against Tobacco works with the Westchester County community to create a healthier tobacco and vape free space for residents and businesses. The Hudson Valley county occupies 450 square miles and is home to nearly one million people who live within its 45 cities, towns and villages. Westchester has the second lowest smoking rate in the state of New York. POW’R continues working with local coalitions, the Department of Health and municipalities to collaborate with local partners, citizens and organizations to continue to provide smoke and vape free environments for all Westchester residents.

In the Fall of 2019 POWR Against Tobacco partnered with the City of Yonkers to ban flavored E-cigarettes within its local municipality. As a trailblazer the City of Yonkers was one of the first in the state to adopt such policy. This was a monumental partnership with not only the City of Yonkers, but Student Assistance Services and Yonkers Coalition for Youth. Through this partnership we successfully educated the City of Yonkers Council Members, protected the lives of nearly 200,000 residents and as of the Spring of 2020 we have seen new groundbreaking flavor ban legislation on the state level.

Collaborating with our local Rockland County community partners, POW’R participates in a variety of community events and activities that deliver our message throughout the county and empower communities to engage in strategies to de-normalize tobacco use. Through an alliance with the Truth Initiative, POW’R Against Tobacco partnered with Dominican College to establish a tobacco free campus in 2020, providing a healthier environment for students, staff, and administrators.
