Last month, POW'R was invited to Ms. Moncado’s Graphic Design Class at Saunders Trades And Technical High School in Yonkers to act as the students’ client, tasking them with designing a poster to inform the community about the various ways tobacco companies can influence and encourage young people to start smoking and vaping. Students were asked to focus on 1 of 3 issues:
1. Tobacco in media: Either overt advertising done by the tobacco industry on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, or covert to start smoking/vaping like celebrities in movie, television, and music videos do.
2. Flavored tobacco products
3. And tobacco retailer density in the community
These messages are especially important for a city like Yonkers where there are over 260 tobacco retailers and youth are constantly bombarded by in-person tobacco advertising, on top of the existing advertising they see on their social media, in movies, music videos, and on television.

A smoke and vape free campus is like a breath of fresh air for everyone!
For the past few months, we've been working with Mercy's Health and Wellness Center to ensure that staff and students alike are aware of the upcoming changes to the school's smoke free policy. Smoking and vaping of any substance will be prohibited on ALL campus property including parking lots, paths, fields, and sports/recreational areas.
This change will kick secondhand smoke to the curbs—keeping everyone at Mercy safe from its harm. We at POW’R are confident that it will inspire healthier habits, improve the air quality, and foster a lively space perfect for learning and thriving. 👏👏👏
